RAJKOT/RANCHI: In a mixed bag for Congress, the party on Sunday wrested Kolebira assembly seat from Jharkhand Party but lost Jasdan seat in Gujarat to BJP. Bypoll in Kolebira was necessitated after the arrest and disqualification of sitting MLA Enos Ekka in a murder case while in Jasdan, five-time legislator Kunwarji Bavaliya had crossed over to BJP in July after resigning from Congress and the assembly.

Bavaliya, who was rewarded with a cabinet berth by Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani immediately after quitting Congress, reaffirmed his supremacy on his constituency by winning by a margin of 19,797 votes. Bavaliya defeated Congress's Avsar Nakia, who fought his maiden election after managing the former's campaigns for several years.

Bavaliya, who represents the Koli community, increased his victory margin by about 10,000 votes compared to the December 2017 polls. With this victory, BJP reached the three-figure mark of 100 seats in the 182-member state assembly.
