KALYAN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a swipe at the Congress on Tuesday, saying while it had given people "the Adarsh scam in the name of homes for the poor," his government was providing real houses under the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna. He also said that while the earlier (UPA) government built only 8km of metro line between 2006 and 2014, the NDA government had built 35km in four years and would build an over 275km-long metro network by 2024.

The PM made these statements at a function in Kalyan where he laid the foundation stone for two new metro lines -- Metro 5 that is Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan and Metro 9 that is Dahisar-Mira-Bhayandar - and Cidco's affordable housing scheme, under which 90,000 homes are to be built in Navi Mumbai. The bhoomipujan for all three projects, collectively worth Rs32,000 crore, was done at the Phadke ground in Kalyan in front of a crowd of about 5,000 people. The cost of Cidco's housing project for economically weaker sections is Rs18,000 crore.

"The previous (UPA) government constructed only 25 lakh houses in four years, while our government has constructed 1.25 crore houses. If the Congress government had to construct 1.25 crore houses, they would have to spend five generations," Modi said, adding that under the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna, 8 lakh houses in all were being built in Maharashtra. The PM noted that the cities of Mumbai and Thane had helped people achieve their dreams, and the number of people buying their first homes had gone up substantially in the last seven to eight months as the NDA government had offered various schemes.

Appreciating the spirit with which Mumbaikars and Thanekars live their lives, Modi said, "Everyone carries a dream in his or her eyes, and we want to fulfil those dreams."

The PM delighted the audience when he started his speech in Marathi by paying tribute to the heroes of Maharashtra such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, Tukaram Maharaj, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Swatantryaveer Savarkar.

CM Devendra Fadnavis said at the function that in view of locals' demand for extension of the metro network to Dombivli, the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan line would be extended to Taloja via Dombivli and the Dahisar-Mira-Bhayandar metro to Vasai-Virar.
