Nagpur: Organ donation by the family of one Sanjay Hiralal Naik, (50) gave a new lease of life to three persons. The family donated the kidneys, corneas and liver in what is the 46th cadaver organ donation in Nagpur zone.
These donations led to the 82nd and 83rd kidney transplants so far since 2013. It was also the 33rd liver retrieval and the 20th liver transplant this year in city. The patient was earlier admitted to Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, Digdogh from where he was transferred to Care Hospital on Wednesday. He had episodes of sudden onset of unconsciousness after which he was eventually declared brain-dead here.
The patient’s mother and brother readily agreed to donate the organs on the request of the hospital counsellors. After a formal consent from the deceased patient’s family, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) allocated one kidney to a 43-year-old man at the hospital and another kidney went to a 52-year-old man at Wockhardt Hospital as per ZTCC’s wait list. The liver went to a 59-year-old woman at Alexis hospital. The corneas went to the Mahatme Eye bank.
Care Hospital CMD Dr Varun Bhargav and ZTCC secretary Dr Wankhede were present while the coordination efforts for allocating were going on.
The panel of experts who conducted the apnoea test included Dr Varun Bhargava, neurosurgeon Dr Pavitra Patnaik, ICU in charge Dr Kamal Bhutada, neurologist Dr Vivek Junewar and intensivist Dr Chetan Sharma. Shubhangi Pokale coordinated the donation at Care Hospital.
The cross-matching and compatibility tests were carried out by Dr Shailendra Mundhada of Dhruv Pathology. Nagpur ZTCC President Dr Vibhavari Dani, Vice President Dr V L Gupta and coordinator Veena Wathore helped in managing the entire process smoothly.
